The most meaningful gift you can give this Mother’s Day is something that shows Mom how much she has taught you. Pass on her love and care by making a donation in her honor that allows a low-income senior—who might otherwise spend the day alone—to attend our special "I Remember Mama" Mother’s Day celebration.

Spokane, Wash. – April 15, 2013 – Area residents have the opportunity to give Mom something local, green and inexpensive this Mother’s Day and make a difference for Spokane women in need at the same time by participating in the 15th annual "I Remember Mama."

For as little as $25, individuals and families can sponsor a “Mama” in honor (or in memory) of their mother or loved one. Sponsoring a “Mama” sends an elderly or disabled low-income woman to a special Mother’s Day luncheon for women who are separated from or have outlived their families and would otherwise spend the day alone.

The "I Remember Mama" luncheon, hosted by Volunteers of America, serves as many as 150 needy women each year. Each woman receives the kind of honor, pampering and love we give our own mothers. Thanks to individual donors and generous sponsors “Mamas” enjoy a fancy lunch at the Red Lion Hotel at the Park, flowers, gifts, entertainment and companionship—at no cost to the participants.

“It really is the perfect easy, meaningful gift,” explains Volunteers of America president Marilee Roloff. “It’s local—helping needy women right here in Spokane; it’s green—no stuff, no packaging; it’s simple—people can sign up online or on the phone in less than five minutes; and we even send a Mother’s Day card telling mom about your gesture on her behalf. But most importantly, so many moms spend so much time trying to teach their children about serving others. This is the perfect way to pass that on and to show her that it sunk in!”
