What an odd time this is.

First and foremost, how are you feeling? Do you need to make a telehealth appointment, self-isolate, or just call and check in on your family? Please take the time to do so if you can. We want to see all of us come through this. We know our Spokane community is resilient, compassionate and responsive.

There is much concern about the health of our loved ones, ourselves, and the most vulnerable in the community. As schools, restaurants and movie theaters close, I think I can speak for all of us, we have never seen anything like this before. I just wanted to check in with you about what we are doing at Volunteers of America of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho to address this outbreak.

Out of an abundance of caution, we are cancelling all events, group meetings, shelter tours and walking tours and in-person fundraisers. While these events help us communicate with you and are a major key in making sure we have the funds to operate it’s vital that VOA do everything in its power to help flatten the curve in Spokane.

I want to send a huge thank you to our meal providers, who are bringing meals to the shelter door, our amazing staff who come to work in this trying time, and our dedicated donors who show their love and compassion everyday.

As shelter providers, we know there are limited-to-no options if we close our doors. We are continuing to serve those who need us and we could use your help. We are in the process of assessing what impact cancelling three fundraisers will have on the services we provide. We are also working with local leaders to determine what new costs we will incur as a result of the outbreak. Stay tuned…

Please keep those we serve in your thoughts and prayers. It’s an unsettling time for those of us with homes and even more so for those without.

Thank you for all that you do for the community, and please, please look after yourself and your family.

Also, if you have extra toilet paper, latex gloves, masks or other scarce supplies, please consider delivering some to one of our shelters.
