Mohawkathon to benefit homeless teens
For Release: July 16, 2007

Contact: Gretchen Weikleenget Telephone: 509.482.0419

SPOKANE –Gretchen’s Hair Studio will host a Mohawkathon to benefit Crosswalk (Volunteers of America’s shelter for homeless teens) on July 21 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The salon is located at 1711 N. Hamilton St.

Participants are not required to cut their hair. Stylists will create a temporary “mohawk” effect using hair styling products and funky temporary colors. Salon owner, Gretchen Weikleenget says her stylists can fashion anyone’s hair into a Mohawk. The salon has set a goal of 150 mohawks during the one-day event. All proceeds from the suggested $5 minimum donation per participant will benefit Crosswalk. The traditional mohawk cut will be available for a $10 donation.

“I have been a salon owner in Spokane for 11 years and I wanted to host this fun and unique fundraiser so I can give something back to the community. I approached Crosswalk to partner with us and they loved the idea” says Weikleenget.

The theme for this year’s Mohawkathon is “Change your hair for a day and change a homeless teen’s life forever.” Crosswalk changes the lives of Spokane’s homeless teens every day. In addition to food and shelter, Crosswalk offers: family reconciliation services, self-sufficiency training, educational opportunities, access to health care and substance-abuse treatment, and transitional housing. In an average year, Crosswalk serves 1,000 youth, ranging in age from 13 to 21. Emergency shelter is available 365 days a year and all services are free and voluntary.

Individuals, schools, organizations, or businesses interested in participating may come to the salon from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on July 21, donate a minimum of $5, and receive a spiky, sparkly, fun, colorful Mohawk. Participants will enjoy prizes, beverages and a DJ while they unleash their inner “wild child” and help the Spokane community.
