Spokane, Wash.—On Mother’s Day, May 199, Volunteers of America will host I Remember Mama, a tribute luncheon for 100 elderly low-income and disabled women who would otherwise be alone. The luncheon will be held 1:00 p.m. at the Red Lion Hotel at the Park – Skyline Ballroom (W. 303 North River Drive). Special guests will honor mothers with flowers, gift bags and entertainment. KXLY News 4 Kirk Hawkins will emcee the event.

I Remember Mama is made possible by volunteers, individual donors and businesses in our community, many contributing in honor or in memory of their mothers. I Remember Mama gives people the opportunity to demonstrate genuine care and concern for the elderly and forgotten in the community; by donating their time or contributing a gift, they make a real difference in the life of each woman honored. This special event, with the theme “An Afternoon in Paris,” offers an unforgettable soiree complete with fine dining, entertainment, flowers, gifts and companionship for local seniors.

Mary Daugharty has been a member of the planning committee for years. She and her husband Dave act as table hosts, providing companionship for the Mamas and helping them with anything that comes to hand during the event. Over the years, they have had dozens of experiences that confirm their work makes a real difference.

“One year, when the musical entertainment started,” recalls Dave, “a woman at my table said ‘Oh, if I could just dance one more time.’ She said it so wistfully that I had to ask her to dance! The next year, when she didn’t come, we found out she had passed away. For all we know, it really was her last dance.”

“At my table a couple of years ago,” adds Mary, “one woman didn’t say one word until the lunch was almost over. She spoke so quietly I almost missed it when she brushed her hand on the table and said ‘A white tablecloth. I wait for this all year.’ The truth is, so do we.”
