Spokane, Wash.—Hairstylists at Gretchen’s Hair Studio will spend a hot July day creating dozens of “faux-hawks.” The colorful, sparkly, temporary hairstyle can be created with any type or length of hair and will be offered as a way to raise money for Crosswalk—a program of Volunteers of America and Spokane’s only emergency shelter for teens.
This “Mohawk-a-thon” benefit will be held Thursday, July 12, 2008, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Gretchen’s (1711 N. Hamilton St.).
Elaborate, colorful, up-do style Faux-hawks will be provided for a $20 donation per participant, simpler haircuts (including permanent Mohawks) and styles will be available for a $10 donation. Last year, stylists created 68 “faux-hawks” for school-age kids, businessmen, teens, families and other friends of Crosswalk at the one-day event. This year’s goal is 150 Mohawks during the one-day event.
Festivities will include live music, appearances by the Lilac City Roller Girls, a raffle for a guitar, food and ice-cream, games for kids, Mohawk-a-thon t-shirts and prizes for the tallest, the youngest and the most outrageous Mohawks or Faux-hawks.
In an average year, Crosswalk serves 1,000 youth, ranging in age from 13 to 21. In addition to food and shelter, Crosswalk offers family reconciliation services, educational opportunities, self-sufficiency training, access to health care and substance-abuse treatment, and transitional housing. Emergency shelter is available 365 days a year and all services are free and voluntary.
