Supporting a Better Life

As many as 8% of Spokane County residents suffer from serious mental illness or emotional disturbance—a significantly higher rate than both the state and national averages, perhaps because of the significant shortage of mental health services or the poverty rate in the county.

Spokane Regional Health District (Mental Health Services Report, 2006)

Whenever possible, we do all we can to help someone get better. But for those who can’t get better, we do everything in our power to help them have a better life. That’s why we offer affordable housing for low-income men and women with chronic or severe mental illness.

Residents receive services that empower them to live stable, independent lives that may even include school and employment.

With the loving guidance of a full-time service coordinator and 24-hour staff, residents are better able to manage their nutrition, household chores, medical needs, safety and security, transportation and even the kind of social, recreational and educational activities that significantly enrich their quality of life.

The three facilities, with a total of 66 one- and two-bedroom apartments between them, are owned by Volunteers of America, Inc. and managed by Kiemle & Hagood.
